Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of research does the BEAT Lab conduct?

Our work focuses on understanding how psychosocial factors—such as depression, sleep disturbances, and bereavement—affect cardiovascular health, and on developing behavioral interventions to improve heart health.

What is Dr. Chirinos’ mentorship style?

Dr. Chirinos’ approach to mentorship is collaborative, supportive, and individualized. She prioritizes helping trainees develop strong research and writing skills, think critically about scientific questions, and gain confidence as independent scholars. She values clear communication, high standards, and work-life balance.

What qualities do you look for in prospective lab members?

We look for curiosity, reliability, and enthusiasm for research. Previous experience is helpful but not required; a genuine interest in health psychology and behavioral medicine is most important. Expectations are scaled appropriately for each level of training, with increasing independence and responsibility for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Can I participate remotely?

All research activities are conducted in person at the University of Miami.
